A one year old baby from Canfield remains in hospital after she was in a serious crash in Caledonia on Tuesday. Everleigh Grace’s family is hoping she’ll pull through despite being critically injured in the crash.
Everleigh Grace Haworth Battice just celebrated her first birthday two weeks ago. She lives in Canfield with her mother Heather Haworth and grandmother Karen Cosby. Karen says the toddler is a little diva who loves smiling for a camera. Everleigh loves car rides but the ride she took with her 19 year old mother ended in tragedy Tuesday afternoon near Caledonia. Everleigh now has irreversible brain damage. Everleigh’s mother suffered minor injuries. Everleigh’s grandmother posted on Facebook that Everleigh is at McMaster Children’s Hospital where staff are trying to keep her comfortable. She also posted “Her time with us is fleeting and we cherish the ability to be with her and memorize every detail of her lovely little face. She is truly in gods hands now.”
The OPP is investigating how the SUV lost control and rolled into the ditch, the roads were wet at the time. OPP Officer, Mark Foster says “The technical collision investigators are examining the vehicle to rule out any possibilities or maybe find something, That’s all part of their investigation.”
Karen says her granddaughter was strapped in to a “top of the line” rear facing car seat and it was installed according to guidelines. She says it was an unfortunate accident and blames no one. Karen says Everleigh is an affectionate, friendly little girl. She can’t walk yet, but she chased her dogs and cats with her quick crawl. Karen also told CHCH in a facebook message “She has been an integral and beautiful part of our daily life for the past year she was the light of my life.”
Constable Mark Foster says it could takes weeks or even months before they have answers as to why this crash happened. Right now they’re being sensitive to the family’s needs to be by Everleighs side and are waiting to ask more questions.
