One person is in hospital and two cats are dead after a kitchen fire in a Port Colborne home early Wednesday morning.

Fire Chief Stan Double says unattended grease on a stove sparked the blaze around 1 a.m. at 394 Barrick Rd.

While the fire was contained to the kitchen, Double says there is “extensive” smoke damage throughout the home. The cost of the damage has not yet been determined.

One person was taken to hospital for minor smoke inhalation. Two cats died due to smoke exposure.
