Downtown Hamilton shooting leaves 19-year-old man dead: police

Hamilton police say a 19-year-old man is dead after a shooting in the downtown core Thursday night.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., officers were called to 191 Main St. West for reports of a shooting.

Upon arrival, police found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was then transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries where he later died.

Detectives have confirmed to CHCH News that the victim is a 19-year-old man of Hamilton.

Investigators believe there may be more injured parties who fled the scene.

A description of the suspected shooter has not been provided.

The apartment building across from Hess Village belongs to CityHousing Hamilton, offering supportive housing for seniors and transitional homes for young people at risk of homelessness.

“Our deepest condolences are with the family, friends and loved ones of the individual who lost their life. We also recognize the significant impact this has on residents of the building and the surrounding community during an incredibly difficult time,” says a spokesperson for the city in a statement to CHCH News. “The safety and well-being of residents and staff is our primary focus. Supports will be available on-site for tenants and resources are also available to staff who may be affected.”

It adds that the City of Hamilton is now working with police and cannot comment on the matter further.

Police had a section of Main Street closed for several hours Thursday night, but the road has since reopened.

This is the city’s third homicide of the year, according to authorities.

Police are asking residents in the area to review their CCTV cameras for anything suspicious.
