One man is dead after an exchange of gunfire with Niagara Regional Police Saturday night in the area of Ontario Road and Steel Street in Welland.

Niagara police said in a release Sunday morning they were contacted by Peel police regarding a man wanted in connection with a domestic-related incident involving a firearm that occurred in Mississauga on Dec. 12.

Officers soon determined the suspect was at a home in Welland. A large police presence was deployed to the area, including an armoured vehicle.

In a press release, the SIU says the man shot at officers first from the home, police then fired tear gas into the home, driving the man out. He shot at police again and they returned fire.

Paramedics provided medical care to the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Due to the officer-involved shooting, the Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate.

One officer was struck in the exchange but has since been released from hospital.

Investigators say there is no ongoing risk to public safety.
