The Oakville Fire Department is warning residents of a potential smoke detector scam.
They say people claiming to be with the fire department have been going door-to-door and making calls offering free smoke detector inspections.
“The fire department does not, under any circumstances, randomly call homeowners to offer inspections and we’re urging residents to be very cautious when dealing with solicitors claiming otherwise,” said Fire Chief Brian Durdin. “It’s also important to know that when crews go door-to-door as part of our home fire safety campaign they always arrive in a fire truck, in uniform and with proper identification.”
Fire officials say they do not offer those services and are asking residents to be cautious. The only time they check smoke alarms or carbon monoxide detectors is if it’s requested by home owners.
