Oakville construction worker trapped

Some frightening moments at an Oakville construction site this afternoon. A worker has been rushed to hospital after taking a fall.

The corner of Third Line and Dundas Street became a terrifying scene for some of the workers on site. They are just fencing off the area that they were digging at all day to work on the electrical distribution system in the area. Then just before 4 o’clock, out of nowhere, a part of the trench they were digging somehow gave way sending two of the workers falling into the trench itself. It is about five and a half to six feet deep.

One of the workers was sent to hospital, a 17-year old boy. We were told that he was breathing and talking.

I spoke to the Chief Operating Officer of the company that employs these workers and he said he was sent to hospital for precautionary reasons.

People had sent videos and pictures via social media. An Ornge helicopter had forced closure of Dundas Street as it landed having heard the call and just so happened to be flying overhead at the time. However, the chopper was not required.

Scott Mudie, Competitive Energy Services Group. “All of the safety precautions were in place. We stepped back the trench according to specifications. At this point we’ll have to do further investigation to determine what the cause to the partial collapse were.”

According to the Ministry of Labour, the youngest a person can be to work on a construction site is 16-years old.
