No winner on Conclave’s 1st ballot
Updated We’ll have to wait a little longer to find out who the next Pope will be.
The black smoke rose from the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel, signalling that the 115 Cardinals inside have not yet selected a Pope. The smoke was seen by thousands of people in St Peter’s Square, some watching giant televisions.
The Cardinal-electors will hold a new round of voting tomorrow morning and they’ll remain sequestered until they elect a successor to Pope Benedict, who resigned last month. When they agree on a new Pope, white smoke will rise from the chimney, and the bells of St Peter’s Basilica will ring.
