No transit strike in Burlington

Burlington transit riders are able to continue using the city’s bus system today after workers ratified a second tentative contract agreement.

Members of CUPE Local 27-23 were set to strike at midnight unless they agreed to the revamped contract.  They voted against an earlier version a week ago.

The key issue was wages.  Burlington drivers make around $25 an hour, compared to $29 in Hamilton and $32 in Toronto.  Burlington mayor Rick Goldring says he’s pleased with the deal, which will run through June 30, 2018.

City council expects to ratify the agreement at a meeting on Wednesday.
