Niagara police warn residents about flood restoration scams

As the Niagara Region continues to clean up after significant rainfall, police are warning residents about flood restoration scams.

Officers say scammers are imitating restoration companies and scrap metal or junk removal services as a way to gain access to homes and search for valuables.

Police are urging residents to not leave property outside and unsecured in areas affected by the flooding.

Officers are advising residents to protect themselves by getting recommendations from those they trust and ensuring the contractor is insured before starting the work.

It is also advised to ask contractors for references from their past jobs and to be cautious of door-to-door or over the phone offers.
