Niagara police have arrested a 27-year-old man after the body of another man was found in a Port Colborne home, prompting an hours-long manhunt Wednesday.

Police say its emergency task unit was called to a home on Fares Street, where a man was found dead.

Investigators then discovered that a possible armed man may have fled to another home on Mitchell Street, which officers eventually cleared for the outstanding suspect.

“Out of an abundance of caution, residents were asked to remain in their homes and local schools were asked to hold-and-secure while the initial investigation was conducted,” police wrote in a media release.

Niagara police identified Brady Neff of Port Colborne as the suspect in this weapons incident. He was wanted for possession of a firearm and described as “armed and dangerous.”

Investigators say Neff wasn’t in either of the homes. Police were then led to an area on the west side of the Welland Canal near Clarence Street.

The change in scene resulted in police lifting the hold-and-secures at DeWitt Carter Public School, Lakeshore Catholic High School, École Élémentaire Catholique Saint Joseph, and Saint Thérèse Catholic Elementary School.

Around 3 p.m., officers found and arrested Neff in the area of Killaly Street East and Welland Street.
