Niagara police have arrested a man with no fixed address as part of an assault investigation in downtown St. Catharines.

Officers were called to St. Paul and Court streets at around 9 p.m. Sunday for reports of an assault with a weapon.

They say one person, a male of undisclosed age, was sent to an out-of-region hospital by Niagara paramedics, where they determined their injuries to be non-life threatening.

Investigators say the man had approached the victim and began an unprovoked attack, which resulted in an injury to the victim’s head.

Police later identified and arrested 37-year-old Troy Wilson at an address on St. Paul Street.

Wilson was charged with offences including aggravated assault, possession of a dangerous weapon, and disguising with intent.

Officers did not say what Wilson was allegedly using as a weapon.

He remains in custody and is scheduled to attend a bail hearing Monday at a St. Catharines courthouse.

Niagara police posted on X just before 11 p.m. Sunday, asking residents to avoid the area of Court Street during the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at (905) 688-4111, option 3, ext. 1009865.
