Niagara’s police service dog Jax led officers to a man police say fled the scene of a crash in St. Catharines.

Officers were called to a single-vehicle rollover in the area of Louth St. and Crestcombe Rd. around 1:30 a.m. Friday.

Callers said the vehicle was on fire and the driver had fled the scene.

Fire crews were able to put out the fire and Niagara Police’s K9 team was called in.

Police say Jax and his officer handler tracked the driver from the scene to the area of Cornwell Circle and Vintage Cres., about half a kilometre away.

24-year-old Adam Malik of Toronto was arrested. Police say he was not injured in the crash.

He is charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident and impaired driving.
