Niagara police arrest man connected to 3 robberies in Niagara Falls

Police have arrested a man from Niagara Falls Tuesday night and charged him for three robberies in the Niagara Falls area.
Investigators say on Dec. 16, 2024, at around 6:45 p.m. a man had entered the Victoria and Maple Variety Store at 4623 Victoria Avenue and allegedly threatened an employee there with a kitchen knife.
They say the man demanded money from the register, before leaving the area on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.
Detectives say a man was also involved with a robbery at a Subway restaurant at 4623 Victoria Avenue in Niagara Falls on Jan. 12, 2025.
Officers say the man had entered the restaurant at around 8:40 p.m. where he allegedly confronted an employee with a box-cutter knife for money from the register.
Police say the man fled the restaurant on foot soon after with an unknown amount of money.
Investigators attended a report of a robbery at the Dairy Queen at 5500 Ferry Street in Niagara Falls at around 9:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
Officers say their investigation determined that a man wearing a ski mask had entered the restaurant, threatened an employee with a pocketknife and demanded money from the register.
They say the man fled on foot with an unknown amount of cash money.
Detectives say they were able to locate the suspect a short distance away, and an investigation revealed that the same man was also responsible for the two other robberies.
Police have charged 41-year-old Shawn Downey from Niagara Falls with three counts of robbery and three counts of disguising with intent.
Downey has held in custody pending a bail hearing scheduled to take place at a St. Catharines courthouse Wednesday.
