Niagara New Year’s Eve

The Niagara Parks Commission is hosting the biggest New Year’s Eve bash in our country. The star-studded entertainment includes Keith Urban, Shawn Mendes and Nick Jonas. Sixty-thousand people are expected at the outdoor concert tonight.
Already Queen Victoria Park is jammed with excited fans. They started lining up in the wee hours of the morning.
“We’ve been here since 6:30. Maybe we’ll get lucky tonight and get VIP tickets.”
Why stand out in the cold for hours?: “Shawn Mendes! Nick Jonas!”
And the fans up front are already armed with their signs. And they’re keeping warm with jumping jacks.
Even with the forecast for lake effect snow and the winds picking up, these fans who’ve been out here since morning say they don’t care how cold it gets.
“I’ve heard like minus 25 with the wind chill. We’ve got so many layers on and heat pads and the whole works.”
(You don’t look like you’re dressed for cold weather?): “I’ve got five layers of pants on. I got like six shirts on.”
And what do you do during all that time?
“We have our phones, and we have food.”
The Harrington family from London is trying to stake out a spot: “We were watching the news and we saw people had been lining up since last night so we’d thought we’d come down and check it out.”
The Creighton family flew in from St. Louis for the show. Who do they want to see?: “Keith Urban. Nick Jonas is the one I wanted to see. Keith Urban for me.”
It’s Keith Urban for seven-year old Averie too: “I really, really like him.”
It’s cold out here–why not stay inside?: “It’s not the same. It’s not the same. You can watch a concert from home, or you can come
here. You can say I’ve been there, and done that.”
Bundled up in blankets and party hats over toques, these people are ready to celebrate.
It’s really cold already this evening, but the Niagara Parks Police and emergency workers remind us that last New Year’s Eve in the park it was much colder with a bitter wind chill. So they fully expect to see the 60,000 people that they’re expecting and the show begins at 8pm.
