Niagara Health issues warning over phone scam

Niagara Health is warning the public about a phone scam that’s trying to steal personal information by impersonating the healthcare agency.

It says someone claiming to be a Niagara Health staff member is calling patients and asking for their name, social insurance number, date of birth and address.

The agency says it would never ask for someone’s SIN over the phone, as the only time that information is required is in a case involving the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, and that is only done in-person.

When a staff member calls patients, Niagara Health’s name and number will appear on call display.

The agency says it has notified Niagara police, and anyone who receives a suspicious phone call is asked to contact police at 905-688-4111.
