We’re getting our first look at Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s indie drama Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, a film that won a lot of admirers at this year’s Sundance Film Festival in January. Based on the novel of the same name by Jesse Andrews, the film tells the story of a boy who, along with his movie-making “co-worker”, is pressured by his mom into befriending Rachel, a classmate who has just been diagnosed with cancer. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for drama at the fest – a feat which a little film called Whiplash did last year.

We’ll see if this is 2015’s dark horse awards contender when the film opens on June 12.
