New tech lets Niagara police spot stolen cars faster

Niagara police say they have officially begun using in-car camera systems with integrated automatic license plate reader technology.

The mobile system works through a camera that’s mounted onto the windshield of police vehicles.

It continuously scans license plates within the camera’s range, and will alert officers to any license plates that have been placed on an alert list.

This tells officers right away if a car has been stolen, reported missing, associated with a warrant, or belongs to someone with a suspended license.

Authorities say the system automatically deletes any information about plates that aren’t on the alert list.
