New program looks to make Hamilton homes more energy efficient

The City of Hamilton has launched a new program to help homeowners reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make their homes more energy efficient.

The Better Homes Hamilton pilot is set to offer aid to 50 local homeowners to support the city’s climate change efforts at the individual level.

The program will provide low–interest rate fixed rate loans of up to $20,000 to eligible Hamiltonians to reduce the carbon footprint of their homes with energy retrofits.

The city says this will include improving a building’s overall performance through insulation and air sealing, the installation of Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) and smart thermostats, along with infrastructure upgrades to electrical panel and ductwork if needed.

Eligible residents can apply through the city’s website through to Feb. 1, or until the program reaches capacity.

Applicants must own a detached or semi-detached house or townhouse within the city, have a property tax account and be in good standing.

All owners of the home are required to consent to participating in the program and landlords do qualify.

In order to qualify, applicants must not have already installed a heat pump, draft proofing and/or installation, or have already begun the work they are applying to have completed.

The city says that funding to support the program will include up to $1 million in loans throughout 2023-24 to retrofit homes, as well as an “Energy Concierge” service to assist participants in navigating the experience.

The loans will be repaid through property tax bills, with a 0 per cent interest rate being offered during the pilot phase.

Both virtual and in-person information sessions are expected to be hosted by the city to answer questions regarding the program.

All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by March 31. Full details can be found through the city’s website.
