Multiple business close Sunday as snowstorm blows through GTHA

Many businesses and services are closed Sunday as a snowstorm continues to blow through regions in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area.

Certain regions across Hamilton and its surrounding areas are expected to see snow accumulate up to 40 centimetres through the weekend into Family Day Monday.

The City of Hamilton issued a cold weather alert Sunday, effective overnight, which is issued when weather conditions are at or under minus 15 degrees Celsius, or minus 20 degrees with wind chill.

Hamilton Winterfest has cancelled all programming at the POP and HUB locations, with programming hoping to resume on Monday.

Disabled and Aged Regional Transit System (DARTS) have closed operations, and is notifying customers who have booked trips and are working on returning clients home who are already out.

Hamilton Street Railway services are still operational with some buses behind schedule.

The City of Hamilton posted on X at around 2:20 p.m. announcing lane restrictions on the Claremont Access in the northbound direction. The outermost two lanes will be closed to allow road crews to remove the snow, which could take a few hours to clear.

All YMCA health, fitness and aquatics centres are closed, with make-up classes for swim lessons and advanced aquatics courses to be rescheduled.

All of McMaster University’s scheduled programs and events are cancelled, and all facilities will also be closed, except for eateries within residences.

The MacBain Community Centre in Niagara Falls is open with staff on site, but registered programs including swimming lessons are cancelled.

St. Catharines Kiwanis Aquatics Centre, St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre, Dunlop Drive Older Adult Centre and Russel Avenue Community Centre closed as of 1 p.m.

The Meridian Centre and the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre are open with events running as scheduled.

Public skating at the Gale Centre Arena is also cancelled for Sunday.

All registered town recreation and culture programs at Oakville centres are cancelled.

The Oakville Museum and all Oakville Public Library branches are closed.
