The town of Milton getting some more money from the province Thursday to keep the wheels rolling on its transit system.

Milton is the fastest growing municipality in Ontario and has been hard pressed to keep up with demand for busses. Last year the town saw an 18 percent increase in ridership. Officials say they currently spend about 2.5 million dollars on transit and get more than 800-thousand dollars from the province.

This year Milton will be getting an increase of $230,000. The money comes from the gas tax fund. Milton’s mayor says it will be used to expand service.

Milton Mayor Gordon Krantz: “Houses in Milton are almost like mushrooms, they spring up over night. So you know things change almost on a daily basis with routes. So it would have to be well thought out, not only for the present day people that are there but people that would be there in the future weeks and months. ”

Halton MPP Indira Naidoo-Harris: “So when we fill up our tanks with gas, 14 cents of that goes toward the gas tax. That money comes back to us, comes back to residents in the region, it comes back in the way of public transit.”
