The 22 year old valedictorian for McMaster University’s nursing class overcame an eating disorder that nearly killed her, and published a book about her ordeal, to inspire others.

Marina Abdel Malak was among 466 students graduating today from the McMaster-Mohawk-Conestoga bachelor of science in nursing program at Hamilton Place. Malak’s book, Recipe for Recovery details her battle with anorexia. She’s using the book to help others break the stigma associated with the illness.

“I’ve now been recovered for about 4 years. I’m going strong. I’m at a healthy weight. I’m doing well.”

“Today is my convocation. I’m graduating from my bachelor of science in nursing and I’m hoping to inspire people and let people know that there’s no stigma, no shame associated with any kind of illness and you can really do anything you put your mind and heart to.”

Malak is starting the doctor of medicine program at the University of Toronto in August.
