The OPP have charged a man after he posed as a rental company representative and stole a rental car from a company in Niagara on Wednesday.

The rental company says they received a call from an individual claiming to be from a rental company who told them a repair was needed on the vehicle.

The company then told police that an individual arrived and stated that they were taking the vehicle for a short drive but never returned.

The failure to return is what prompted the company to contact police.

OPP were able to track the stolen vehicle through the tracking system of the rental company and observed the car making its way down Highway 401.

OPP officers attempted to stop the vehicle with a spike belt that the suspect drove around.

An additional OPP unit attempted to stop the vehicle in the Hastings area but the suspect once again evaded police.

Upon entering Peterborough County, members of the OPP were able to successfully deploy a spike belt, deflating the car tires and forcing it to come to a stop.

The suspect then exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot before being taken into custody.

A 38-year-old man from Montréal now faces six charges, including driving without a license and possession of property obtained by crime over and under $5000.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing last Friday.
