Man charged with second-degree murder in Port Colborne shooting

Niagara police have arrested and charged a 30-year-old man with second-degree murder following a fatal shooting in Port Colborne.

Investigators are not releasing any details about the victim’s identity at the request of his family. Detectives are still holding the scene as they continue to look into the motive for the shooting.

Police say it was around 6:35 p.m. Thursday when officers responded to a report of a shooting at an address on Fares Street north of Rodney Street.

“A male was transported away with what appeared to be a gunshot wound, and subsequently passed away at the hospital. Our homicide investigators have taken care of that investigation. We do have one suspect in custody,” said Cst. Richard Hingley of Niagara police.

Tyler Haas was been arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Investigators are waiting on a search warrant for the suspect’s residence.

“Currently, the investigation is at the point where investigators are waiting for search warrants to enter the house. Where this happened to process that scene and, you know, move forward with that investigation at that point,” added Cst. Hingley.

Detectives say it was an isolated incident and Haas and the victim knew each other. But the nature of their relationship is unknown.

“Right now, that is also part of what they’re investigating. They’re conducting interviews. We do know that they are known to each other. The extent of that relationship is unknown, but that will, you know, work towards possibly a motive in this case,” said Cst. Hingley.

Investigators told CHCH News that Haas doesn’t have a criminal record. They add there are no outstanding suspects and there’s not threat to public safety.
