Mac look to seniors for football playoffs

The McMaster football Marauders finished first in the OUA with a 7-1 record. And after a bye week, they will get a chance to avenge their only defeat of the season, as they host the Ottawa Gee Gees in a semi-final playoff game on Saturday. And two defensive stalwarts are ready to lead the way.

McMaster Defensive Backs Joey Cupido and Steve Ventresca are primed for the playoffs.

This season, Ventresca set a new career interception record at Mac with a total of 18. But it’s not personal accomplishments he’s thinking about: “Fortunate enough to have broken some Mac records throughout my career here, so for me that’s a positive outlook. But just to be in the position we are, finished first, have the bye and to be in the semi-finals, and to host the Yates Cup here would be phenomenal.”

As for Cupido, he’s made 19 solo tackles with 4 assists, and 2 interceptions in 2014. But the playoffs are historically when he starts to shine.

He’s made 12 career playoff interceptions in 12 post-season games: “I don’t think I’ve played my best football to date. Playoffs bring out the best in me. I really give it that extra gear, focus and preparation. I’m hoping to put my best foot forward, just lock down whoever I’m facing, maybe get a few turnovers along the way. Do my job, help my team get better and win.”

And win is what they hope to do when they host Ottawa in the OUA semi-finals on Saturday afternoon.
