Luckese back in court

The hearing for a Mississauga woman accused of killing a baby in her home daycare has been put off until February 25th.

April Luckese, 35, is charged with second degree murder in the death of a 14-month old girl. Luckese wasn’t in court today, but family members of Duyan Nguyen were. Nguyen died two days after being found unconscious in Luckese’s home daycare — believed to be unlicensed. Unlicensed daycares are legal but they aren’t subject to the same strict regulations as licensed centres.

Niagara Centre MPP Peter Kormos says it’s time that changed. “People who are operating daycares as a business in the private sector should be regulated in the interest of public safety, so that people who place their kids in those facilities are confident that standards are being met.” Luckese is currently under house arrest after posting $10,000 bail.
