Liberal minister Seamus O’Regan stepping down
Federal Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan says he is stepping down effective tomorrow, and will not be seeking re-election.
In a statement, O’Regan says it was a “difficult decision,” and ultimately, “family comes first.”
Trudeau reportedly has a replacement for the position he will announce, but a broader cabinet shuffle is not expected.
O’Regan was first elected as a member of Parliament in 2015, and has served as a minister since 2017.
He will remain the MP representing the Newfoundland riding of St. John’s South—Mount Pearl until the next federal election.
“We live in hectic times,” he said in a statement.
“Nerves are rubbed raw. But we have a choice. This is a time to unite not divide, create not destroy, and build rather than break this great country of Canada. It is a treasure. It’s worth fighting for.”
