A Campbellville couple is breathing a sigh of relief after two difficult years. The McPhee’s home went up in flames and was completely destroyed on April 29, 2014. They were told it was deliberately set and that owner David McPhee was being charged with arson. Those charges have finally been dropped and the family is ready to rebuild.

The log house on Main Street South in Campbellville, which is just north of Burlington, was a popular bed and breakfast and flower shop. Both David and Martha McPhee and their 3 guests got out safely.

Last year Halton Police charged David with arson and disregard for human life. Their insurance claim was put on hold and the couple, who are in their 70’s, moved in with their daughter.

On April 5, 2016 the Crown Attorney told the court that there was no possibility of a conviction in this case and asked that all the charges be dropped against David McPhee.

The family says they plan to rebuild their log home right where the original burned down. The damages from the fire are estimated at $1.1 million. The McPhee’s say it will take at least a year before their new home is built and they are back in business.

Halton Police say now that the charges are dropped the case will remain open but not active unless they receive a tip.
