Lane reduction work to start tonight on Main Street between Dundurn St. and Sherman Ave.

Beginning today, crews will begin overnight work to reduce the number of travel lanes on Main Street from five to four between Dundurn Street and Sherman Avenue.
The project will take place during the overnight hours and is expected to take five nights to complete, wrapping up by August 20, weather permitting.
The city says as a pedestrian buffer will be added to the south lane of Main Street and bumpouts will be placed at various locations along the street.
Hamilton says the lane reconfigurations will reduce the number of side swipe collision throughout the corridor due to narrow lane widths.
A bus-only lane will also be implemented in the south lane at Main Street and MacNab Street and a transit signal will be added to the intersection to give transit buses priority.
In addition to the lane reconfiguration, the city says various other immediate measures focused on road safety improvements have been implemented along Main Street and King Street between Dundurn Street and the Delta that includes no right turn on red, pedestrian “countdown” signals and ladder crossing among others.
Hamilton city council says eventually Main Street will have two-way traffic, instead of one-way.
The project starting today is part of a larger plan approved by city council to make one of Hamilton’s busiest and most dangerous roads a little safer for pedestrians.
Twelve pedestrians and cyclists have been killed on Hamilton roads so far this year.
