Lack of public funding forces pause on Niagara Irish Festival

Irish Music Niagara says they were unable to secure Canadian public grant support for this year’s festival despite applying to multiple funding programs.

“This decision has not been taken lightly. Over recent months, Irish Music Niagara explored every possible avenue to allow the festival to proceed. For that reason, no announcement was made earlier, as discussions continued with potential partners and funding opportunities,” the organization said in a statement.

“Despite those efforts, the financial and organizational resources required to deliver the festival at the standard expected by our community could not be secured in time.”

Instead of compromising the quality of the event or exposing Irish Music Niagara to significant financial risk, the board has chosen to pause the festival for one year and focus its efforts on returning in 2027 with an even stronger foundation.

In only three years, the Niagara Irish Festival has become one of the region’s most recognized celebrations of Irish culture.

The festival has welcomed more than 10,000 attendees to Niagara Falls, presented over 500 performances by musicians, dancers, storytellers, artists and cultural groups as well as contributed thousands of volunteer hours to make the festival possible.

The event has also generated meaningful economic activity by encouraging visitors to stay in local hotels, dine in local restaurants, support neighbourhood businesses and experience Niagara’s many attractions.

Organizers say that based on their ticketing records, about 40 per cent of ticket purchasers travelled from the GTA.

Over 76,000 people across Niagara identify Irish as part of their ethnic or cultural heritage, according to the 2021 Census.

Although the festival is paused, Irish Music Niagara continues to grow.

The organization’s free community music sessions continue every month at Doc Magilligan’s Irish Pub in Niagara Falls.

Irish Music Niagara announces that they will soon launch a new program of community events running from this autumn through next summer, beginning with an Irish Christmas theatre show in November.
