A public information session on Hamilton’s upcoming stormwater fees set to start next April will be held on Tuesday.

The session — organized by the Flamborough Chamber of Commerce, along with the Hamilton Industrial Environmental Association, Hamilton Chamber of Commerce and Stoney Creek Chamber of Commerce — will take place on June 24 at the Art Gallery of Hamilton.

The Flamborough Chamber of Commerce said that under the new policy, residential properties will be charged based on dwelling type, explaining that single detached homes will be at one billing unit ($200.75/year), semi-detached and townhomes at 0.5 units and multiplexes (three to six units) at 0.3 units.

“This structure means that all single detached homes, regardless of size or impervious surface area, will incur the same fee. Consequently, smaller homes with minimal hard surfaces may end up subsidizing larger residences, raising questions about the policy’s equity,” the statement reads.

For businesses, especially those with extensive impervious surfaces like industrial and commercial facilities, the fee will be calculated based on the “measured impervious area.”

The forum aims to delve into issues around stormwater, offering “a platform for stakeholders to voice concerns and seek clarity on the policy’s implications.”

Registration for the session is on the Flamborough Chamber of Commerce website.
