OPP are frustrated that the number of impaired driving charges continues to be high. Saturday night alone OPP laid 41 impaired driving charges.

“Sadly this is not that surprising for us because we see this kind of number every weekend.” Kerry Schmidt, OPP.

Last weekend they charged 125 people with impaired driving and police are also detecting more drivers impaired by drugs.

“We are seeing more drug impaired drivers now and I think a lot of it has to do with the number of officers who are trained in the drug recognition evaluation.”

Before proceeding with its pot-legalization agenda next spring, the Liberal government is promising to tackle the issue of drug-impaired driving, which bureaucrats say could spike considerably if marijuana becomes legal. Right now police do not have a roadside screening device to detect if a person is on drugs.

17 people have been killed as a result of impaired driving that’s still down from this time last year where 25 people had died.
