I’ll Follow You Down

I’ll Follow You Down is a supernatural thriller directed by Richie Mehta. Marika (Gillian Anderson) and Gabriel (Rufus Sewell) are living a happy life raising their 9-year-old son Erol. But one day Gabriel goes to a conference at Princeton and doesn’t return, leaving Marika and Erol wondering about what happened. Fast forward 12 years, and Erol (Haley Joel Osment) is following in his father’s footsteps, studying physics with his grandfather. When the two discover some of Gabe’s old files, Erol decides to piece together the mysterious disappearance of his dad. The film co-stars Victor Garber and Susanna Fournier.

Mehta drew from a real-life experience when he came up with the idea for I’ll Follow You Down. “I was waiting for a friend from Hungary at the airport and it was taking a very long time for him to come through customs. While I was starting to wonder what was happening, I noticed an older woman who I could see had also been waiting for someone for some time and who was starting to panic. In that moment, the idea of a husband disappearing off the face of the earth and what the fallout of that would be, started playing out in my imagination. I thought about how much harder it would be to lose someone when you have no answers. How much longer – if ever – it would take to move on. The idea of the mystery and betrayal of such a thing struck me as a very interesting place of departure for a character drama.”
