Hypoglycemic drivers
Ontario’s Ombudsman will investigate how the province monitors drivers with uncontrolled hypoglycemia, who may be a danger on the roads.
In 2009, Hamilton school teacher Allan Maki killed three people after he lost control of his SUV while in diabetic shock.
But it took the Ministry of Transportation almost two years to suspend his license.
The ombudsman says the accident raised serious questions about the Ministry’s process of obtaining information about drivers with uncontrolled hypoglycemia.
The investigation is expected to take about six months.
Last December, Maki was given a suspended sentence, with no jail time, after being convicted of dangerous driving.
