(Update)

Tim Hudak has made it official. He’s stepping down as P.C. party leader on July second.

That’s the day MPP’s will return to Queen’s Park for the next session — which will be lead by a Liberal majority government. Hudak announced he was leaving as leader on election night — as he lead his party to a dismal defeat — losing nine seats to the Liberals.

The Canadian Press has learned Hudak sent a letter to Tory caucus members today — announcing he’s stepping down for the good of the party — and the good of his family.

A party insider speaking on background also told C.P. that a “significant portion” of the caucus wanted Hudak to stay on for up to a year while a new leader was chosen — but he didn’t want to stick around that long. Hudak hasn’t made it clear how long he will stay on as the MPP for Niagara West Glanbrook.
