House of Commons finance committee preparing for Trudeau’s testimony

The House of Commons finance committee is meeting to figure out the details of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s planned testimony.

It comes amid controversy surrounding the government’s decision to pick the WE organization to run a $900 million student volunteer program.

WE backed out of the program in early July.

Both Trudeau and Finance Minister Bill Morneau have ties to the organization.

The federal ethics commissioner is probing whether the pair violated conflict-of-interest rules for not recusing themselves from the discussions.

Morneau testified before the committee last week.

He told MPs he had cut a $41,366 cheque to WE earlier that day for travel expenses the group covered for trips he and his family took three years ago.

Trudeau and his chief of staff Katie Telford have agreed to speak with the committee as part of a parliamentary probe.
