Just in time for Canada’s 150th birthday, the Burlington Junction Station – also known as Freeman Station – opened its doors this weekend.

Volunteers have been working tirelessly to complete the restoration project in time for the sesquicentennial holiday.

The mayor of Burlington was joined by dozens of people at the official ribbon cutting yesterday afternoon.

The historic 1906 railway station is one of the last surviving Grand Trunk Railway stations after the loss of the Aldershot GTR. Service at the station stopped in 1988. Before CN demolished it, the city stepped in and purchased the station for a dollar.

“Friends of Freeman Station” formed in 2011 with eleven members and in 2014 they began the restoration work.

Dozens of volunteers spent more than 6,000 hours working on the building over the past three years.
