A big day for dozens of students from our area and beyond as they were sworn into the Canadian Naval Reserves.
The recruits being sworn in today are high school students participating in a co-op program. They will officially be joining the Canadian Navy, doing basic training, earning two high school credits, and getting paid. Along with their recruiting class, they will need to complete two hundred and twenty hours of training to become qualified through the co-op course.
Sergeant John Champion is in charge of basic training for recruits. He says they need to be able to adapt to different situations.
Commodore Pat Montgomery is the commander of the Naval Reserves for the Royal Canadian Navy. He wants the general population to understand the role of the Navy concerning the global economy. He gives this example: Commodore Montgomery says the Navy will always want to do more to recruit new members. there is an immediate need for recruits.
