As the heat wave continues over the Hamilton and Niagara area, residents are trying to keep cool in this high heat.

Research shows what you eat on a hot summer day, and what you wear in the sun can have an impact on your body temperature.

Experts say wearing heavy materials or dark colours in the sun will make you feel a lot hotter.

What you eat on a summer day can also keep you cool. Many cultures in the hottest parts of the world, consume hot drinks and spicy foods during the summer to keep cool. Taylor’s tea room in Dundas sells a lot more iced tea this time of year, but hot tea is still a top seller.

Doctors confirm hot drinks and spicy foods will decrease your body temperature, but they say the cooling effect is so minimal that having something cold instead, won’t do you any harm.

Doctors say go ahead, enjoy that ice cream. Other ways to stay cool; staying in the shade and eating fresh fruit.

If you are going to have a hot drink, doctors recommend a drink without caffeine, either a herbal tea or a decaf coffee, because caffeine makes you use the washroom more often, which will cause you to be dehydrated. So having lots of water is also always a good idea.
