Prime Minister Stephen Harper has named Ontario’s new Lieutenant Governor.

Elizabeth Dowdeswell will become now the 29th official representative for the Queen in Ontario. She has worked with a number of organizations, including the United Nations and Environment Canada.

Dowdeswell was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada and and received the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee medal in 2012.

She replaces David Onley who served in the role for seven years. Onley, who contracted polio as a child, made accessibility across the province his legacy.

Premier Kathleen Wynne praised his service. “David Onley has been an absolutely exemplary Lieutenant Governor, it has been a a joy to work with him for many years.”

“I knew David Onley when he was a journalist and I was a parent activist and we would meet in schools where he would want to do an interview, schools were not accessible for disability.”

“He has been such an advocate for accessibility and has used the office of the Lieutenant Governor so well to raise issues of accessibility for all people, so it’s been an honour to work with him. I know that he will go on and do other great things.”

Onley previously spent over 20 years with Citytv. He has not announced any future plans at this time.
