Hamilton’s Mohawk College is offering buyout packages for full-time staff, just a year after hundreds of positions were cut.
The college says the voluntary exit packages are available to full-time permanent staff across the administrative, faculty and support staff groups.
Last winter, the college cut more than 300 positions and suspended programs, trying to balance the books amid a $50 million deficit, driven by declining international student enrolment.
The union that represents faculty at the college calls the loss of staff and programs “devastating” for the student experience, and is calling on the provincial government to better fund post-secondary education.
Mohawk College’s president said there are no more large-scale lay offs expected, and the 2025-26 budget is balanced.
