The historic Cannon Knitting Mills factory is opening its doors for the first time in six years.

Built two centuries ago, it was mainly used as a knitting factory in World War II. When a fire broke out a few months ago, the building could have been lost. But instead, it’s hosting a tour tonight to get the community interested in restoring it.

The city of Hamilton says this building may be able to transform the entire neighbourhood — and maybe even the whole city — because of its vast history and cultural significance. Tonight they want to show everyone else what they see.

Urban renewal manager Glen Norton told CHCH News, “It’s to raise awareness of the possibilities of this building, and the possibilities of this neighbourhood.”

Architect David Preni: “The company would invite all of its employees and their families. They would have enormous Christmas banquets here. This was more than employment; it was really a cultural hub, and it provided for the community.”

The exploration tour will start at 6 tonight.
