Hamilton’s Hammerheads secure spot at LEGO Provincials

A group of young innovators from Hamilton is gearing up to represent the city at an upcoming provincial LEGO competition. They will face off against 40 other teams from across the province.
Roman Radar is a young patient at the Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre and a team member of the robotics team, the Hammerheads. The Hammerheads have both a junior and a senior team. Alex Thersidis, one of the coaches, says the senior team secured its spot at the championships by finishing first at the regionals last month in Hamilton. The Hammerheads is the only team in North America comprised entirely of special needs kids.
Approximately 400 Grade 7 and 8 students will be competing at the FIRST LEGO League Provincial Championship, which will be held at Durham College in Oshawa. Students will bring robots to participate in different challenges aimed at solving real-world problems.
