(Update)
The condo boom in Hamilton continues. Plans for a 20-storey condo to be built on James Street North, next to the historic Lister building, were announced Friday. And it’s a big deal; $35 to 40 million.

Sean Cowan has more details.

We’ve seen a revitalization of James Street North with Art crawl and Super crawl along with many restaurants, shops and art stores popping up, not to mention the revitalization of the Lister block. And now right here in this empty space is where a 20-storey condo tower will be built.

Looking around downtown Hamilton, there’s no shortage of construction. And soon there will be more. A multi million dollar condo tower will be erected on this historic block.

Shawn Marr is with Hi Rise Group: “Come March, we will be opening a sales centre right here on this lot which will involve a 100 unit condo project and a reconstruction of the original William Thomas building.”

It’s a joint project between Liuna and the Hi Rise Group. Both parties already own the land and worked on the revitalization of the Lister Block together.

Shawn: “It’s just a natural progression from the Lister block to develop this at this time.”

The first four floors of the building will be retail and above that 16 stories of residential a combination of one and two bedrooms as well as live work units. And of course all the amenities that come with a high rise condo.

“It’s about time, we are happy that it’s happening and we hope it encourages similar developments of similar size.”

“It’s definitely a great sign that Hamilton is feeling more confident and people are more confident in Hamilton.”

“As a cycle commuter myself, being able to live and work in a downtown community is fantastic.”

The developer is hoping to start construction next year. No word just yet on how much the units will sell for.
