Hamilton’s forensic pathology unit is closing and moving to Toronto

The death investigations from Hamilton, Niagara, and Brant regions are dealt with at the Hamilton general hospital. Hamilton health sciences appealed the decision to move the unit out of the city.

Ontario’s chief coroner and the chief forensic officer made the announcement earlier this week citing there is an increasing demand for pathology services.

They say the professional capacity and laboratories in Toronto will improve turn-around time on reports.

Hamilton health sciences will determine the impact this will have on their workers. They say they will continue to support their physicians and work with the union during the process of closing down the unit.

Educational autopsies done to train McMaster students will remain in Hamilton.
