Another Hamilton business will be closing its doors on Concession Street at the end o the month after years of serving up a wide lineup of retro treats.

For around 18-years, Chocolatier Jules Gauthier has been serving Hamilton’s sweet tooth at Candi Werx.

The shop has been on Concession Street on the Hamilton Mountain for six years and at its current location since 2021, but its doors will soon be closing.

“There’s been an ongoing issue with my landlord unfortunately, he has made it very clear it’s going to continue to be toxic, there are many things involved that I’m not going to get into great detail about.” said Gauthier.

“I just don’t have it in me to pack up and renovate and do it all again to deal with another landlord and it’s really unfortunate because it’s the community that is going to be missing out.”

She says it is that sense of community that she is going to miss.

“We know our customers by name, by what they order for drinks, or pick out in the store, we know their favourites.”

Wayne Scutt is one of the local residents who frequents the shop.

“Once you come in and have the properly made drinks and coffees and chocolates, it kind of spoils you.”

One of the store’s employees, Kimberly, says she’s going to miss the sweet environment.

“It was a breath of fresh air to come into a work environment where what they say about company culture is wholeheartedly meant and displayed on a regular basis. Working with Jules has been one of the greatest privileges of my life.”

While the physical shop may be closing, Candi Werx will continue as an online entity at Candi-Werx.com next year.

“I have customers who say they will follow me in any format. They don’t care where we are and they will continue to support us. It’s beyond heartwarming, it’s the driving factor that keeps us positive through all of this.” says Gauthier.

The shop’s last day in-person is Dec. 31.
