The City of Hamilton will begin cleaning up algae along the Hamilton Harbour shoreline and Windermere Basin today.

Clean up at the harbour will take place between Bayfront Park and Pier 8.

Hamilton says the work is expected to be done by tomorrow.

Large vacuum trucks will be collecting the algae mats that will be disposed at the Woodward Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Algae is common when water levels are low and when there are extended periods of hot and humid weather.

The city says they have collected samples and will be completing an analysis to see if it is toxic blue-green algae.

Residents are reminded to avoid contact with blue-green algae due to the potential health risks associated with it.
