Hamilton to add 5 more community safety zones on Main, King streets

The City of Hamilton is planning to designate five more stretches of roadway along Main and King streets as community safety zones next year.
The city says there will be automated speed enforcement (ASE) in four of the sections in an effort to promote safety in the crash-prone areas.
“The implementation of five additional stretches of roadways to Hamilton’s community safety zones is a vital measure that will further improve overall pedestrian safety and proactively help to reduce speeding,” Mayor Fred Eisenberger said in a statement Wednesday.

Those caught speeding in a community safety zone may face double the fine, according to the city.
ASE will be set up next year on Main St. East between Gage Ave. South and King St. East; King St. West between Locke St. South and Dundurn St. South; Main St. West between Dundurn St. South and Queen St. South; and King St. East between Gage Ave. South and Lottridge St.
The fifth community safety zone will be along King St. East between Emerald St. and Wellington St. North.
“It includes both the Wellington St. North and Victoria Ave. North intersections, which are noted as having elevated collision frequency, and proximity to properties such as First Place Hamilton Seniors Residence, Saint Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church and the new St. Patrick’s Elementary School” the city says.
This plan is one of many changes the city is making to reduce the number of pedestrian collisions on Main and King streets.
