Hamilton school board considers non-Christian holidays on calendar

The Hamilton public school board is thinking about recognizing non-Christian religious holidays.

Holidays like the Muslim holy day of Eid and the Hindu celebration of Diwali. The changes could be done by changing the school calendar.

The board voted 8-3 to talk to parents, students, community advisory committees, union representatives and others about the proposed change.

Any adjustment would need approval from the ministry of education, and wouldn’t happen before the 2025-26 school year.

This comes after the Waterloo public school board has scheduled two professional development days on non-Christian holidays to accommodate students who celebrate those days.
