Hamilton police are asking for the public’s help identifying a man allegedly involved in a fraud known as the “Grandparent Scam.”

On March 30, an elderly victim received a phone call from a person believed to be a grandchild claiming to have been arrested.

The caller then convinced the elderly victim to use a large sum of their own crash to post bail, instructing them not to tell anyone. They claimed a gag order had been issued by a judge.

According to investigators, arrangements were made for a courier to attend the victim’s home and collect the money.

Officers say between approximately 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., a man attended the residence on foot and retrieved the cash. He was last seen walking eastbound on Beach Road toward Gage Avenue.

Detectives describe the suspect as a man believed to be in his 30s with brown skin, a medium build, dark hair and dark beard. They add he was wearing dark pants, a dark long-sleeve sweater and brown shoes with white soles.

Authorities are asking residents in the area to check their surveillance cameras and contact police if they recognize the man.

Anyone with information relevant to this investigation is asked to contact police at 905-540-5155.

Those wishing to provide information anonymously can do so through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or via their website.
