Hamilton residents who are hearing impaired will now be able to communicate with Hamilton Police through text messages when they dial 911 in an emergency.

The new program will also be available to people with a speech impairment requiring this service.

The program was launched Thursday.

The wireless-based service lets a 911 operator know that a Deaf, Deafened or Hard of Hearing caller needs to communicate using text messaging rather than by voice.

This new service is only available to persons who are Deaf, Deafened or Hard of Hearing as well as persons who have a speech impairment requiring this service.

Pre-registration with your wireless service provider is a prerequisite to access this service.
